As a Cirrus pilot, maintaining instrument proficiency is crucial for safe and efficient flying. If your instrument currency has lapsed beyond six months, the FAA requires you to complete an Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC) to regain your instrument flying privileges.

What is an Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC)?

An IPC is a comprehensive evaluation designed to ensure that instrument-rated pilots can competently operate under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Unlike the biennial flight review, an IPC is only necessary if you haven’t met the instrument experience requirements within the preceding six months.

Tailoring the IPC for Cirrus Aircraft

Cirrus aircraft are equipped with advanced avionics and unique safety features, such as the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS). A standard IPC may not fully address the specific operational considerations of these aircraft. Therefore, it’s beneficial to customize the IPC to focus on areas pertinent to Cirrus pilots:

  • Avionics Proficiency: Ensuring adeptness with the Cirrus Perspective or Avidyne Entegra systems, including flight planning, autopilot operation, and system troubleshooting.
  • Emergency Procedures: Practicing CAPS deployment scenarios and other emergency protocols specific to Cirrus aircraft.
  • Aircraft Handling: Refining techniques for normal and crosswind landings, as well as other maneuvers unique to the Cirrus flight envelope.
