The Cirrus SR22 has been the bestselling general aviation airplane since 2003 and for good reason. Over the past two decades, Cirrus has continuously refined, redesigned, and reimagined what a modern piston aircraft can be.
In my latest YouTube video, I take you through every generation of the SR series from the original G1 all the way to the groundbreaking G7 Plus.
Why should you listen to me?
I’ve owned three Cirrus aircraft over nearly 20 years—a G2, a turbonormalized G3, and now a G6 Turbo. I’m also a Cirrus Authorized Flight Instructor and currently serve as President of the Cirrus Owners and Pilots Association. I’ve watched this airplane evolve from early glass panel experimentation to what is arguably the most advanced piston flight deck in the world.
It All Started with Innovation
The early SR22 models introduced features that were unheard of in their class. The now-famous Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) changed the conversation around safety. Composite construction gave the airplane a sleek, rivet-free exterior. Even the wing design incorporated NASA-inspired safety enhancements.
From there, the pace of innovation never slowed.
The G2 introduced refinements and the Tornado Alley Turbo option. The G3 brought over 700 design changes, including a new carbon fiber wing spar, larger fuel tanks, and Garmin Perspective avionics. The G5 increased gross weight by 200 pounds and added major safety and performance upgrades. The G6 ushered in Perspective Plus and digital connectivity features that felt futuristic at the time.
Then came the G7—with a completely redesigned interior and touchscreen avionics that redefined the piston cockpit.
And just when pilots thought it couldn’t get any better, Cirrus and Garmin introduced the G7 Plus—the first piston aircraft with emergency Autoland capability. That’s not incremental improvement. That’s transformational.
So… Which Generation Is Right for You?
If budget allows, the G7 Plus is the clear technological leader. But the beauty of the Cirrus ecosystem is that earlier generations remain incredibly capable—especially with modern avionics upgrades.
From refurbished G1 aircraft with updated glass panels to fully modernized G3s and G5s, there are excellent options at nearly every price point.
If you’re considering buying a Cirrus or just want to understand how this airplane became the gold standard in GA, you’ll want to watch this full breakdown.
