After an unforgettable few days in Hamburg for the COPA European Migration, reality finally set in. It was time to turn west and begin the long journey home across the North Atlantic.

Part 4 of the Atlantic Crossing series is where the adventure truly intensifies. Headwinds replace tailwinds, weather becomes a real factor again, and the margin for error tightens as each decision carries real consequences. This is not the same flight we flew eastbound, and that difference matters.

Instead of the long overwater leg from Iceland to Prestwick, we chose a more conservative route westbound. From Hamburg, we pointed the nose toward Stornoway, Scotland, accepting challenging weather in exchange for a shorter overwater crossing. It was a classic risk-management tradeoff and one that quickly proved its worth.

This episode puts you right in the cockpit as we deal with:

  • Passport control on the ramp before departure
  • European ATC nuances and flight plan surprises
  • Descending through solid cloud layers into a notoriously gloomy Scottish airport
  • A localizer approach flown right to minimums with gusty crosswinds
  • Starlink connectivity quirks at high northern latitudes
  • Complex latitude and longitude-based routing over Greenland and the North Atlantic
  • ATC handoffs across FIR boundaries that require real-time problem solving

What makes this leg especially compelling is how much of it cannot be fully planned in advance. From creating user-defined GPS waypoints on the fly to coordinating position reports over empty ocean, this is real-world flying where preparation, avionics proficiency, and crew coordination all come together.

By the time we reach Iceland, Greenland, and eventually North America, the flying becomes less dramatic, but the lessons compound. This episode closes with some honest reflection on what it takes to safely complete a journey like this and why having two capable pilots working together made all the difference.
